ABOUT OFFBEAT BUDDY

Sometimes, you just want someone to go with.

Buddy and another fictional adult man relaxing and laughing on a bench in a Japanese neighbourhood park.

For lunch. For a walk.
For a laugh about something that probably wasn’t that funny.

That’s the idea behind Offbeat Buddy: friendly, paid companionship in Kyoto, Osaka, Nara and Kobe, for the everyday moments you’d like to share.

01 / THE IDEA

Why I started
Offbeat Buddy

I’m Max. After living in around ten countries, I’ve made Kyoto my home. I know that feeling of wanting to share a moment without necessarily having someone to call.

I created Offbeat Buddy especially for people who live here. Loneliness is a real issue in Japan, and wanting company doesn’t always come with a big story. Sometimes, your friends are busy. Sometimes, meeting someone new takes energy you don’t have that day.

You can know your city by heart and still wish you had someone to enjoy it with.

And if you’re visiting Japan, you’re just as welcome. Loving your independence and wanting company can happily coexist.

02 / THE SPIRIT

Good company,
with a clear idea

I’m a buddy, not a tour guide. I’m here to spend time with you: talk, laugh, wander, and occasionally take the question of where to eat far too seriously.

Hangouts are for adults, always platonic, and take place in public settings such as cafés, restaurants and parks. With me, the conversation is in English or French.

Paying for that time means someone has set it aside for you. You don’t need a special occasion, an impressive story or an explanation. Wanting a little company is enough.

That’s the spirit I want every buddy who joins Offbeat Buddy to share: curiosity, kindness, a sense of humour, and space for you to be yourself.
